- First, place a large skillet over medium-high heat and add the canola oil. Wait until the oil shimmers, indicating it's hot enough to start cooking.
- Once the oil is hot, add the ground turkey, onion, green bell pepper, black pepper, and kosher salt. Use a wooden spoon to break the meat apart while cooking. Look for the turkey to turn white and no longer be pink, which usually takes about 5 to 7 minutes.
- Drain any excess grease from the skillet. This step is crucial for keeping the dish from becoming too oily.
- Next, stir in the tomato sauce, BBQ sauce, and the remaining ingredients: brown sugar, onion powder, garlic powder, and chili powder. Make sure everything is well combined.
- Reduce the heat to medium and let the mixture simmer for about 10 minutes. This allows the flavors to meld beautifully.
- If you find the mixture too watery, mix together 3 tablespoons of water with 1 tablespoon of cornstarch until fully dissolved. Add this slurry to the skillet and continue cooking. Watch as the mixture thickens and becomes even more delicious!
- Once thickened, it’s time to serve. Spoon the meat mixture onto the brioche buns.
- Top each sandwich with a slice of cheddar cheese and a drizzle of extra BBQ sauce, if desired. The cheese will melt slightly from the heat of the meat.
- Enjoy your BBQ Turkey Sloppy Joes immediately, savoring the delightful flavors and textures.
