Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon Canola Oil
  • 1 lb Ground Turkey
  • 1 small Onion, finely chopped
  • 1 green bell pepper Green Bell Pepper, finely chopped
  • 1 teaspoon Kosher Salt, or to taste
  • 1/4 teaspoon Ground Black Pepper
  • 1 can (8 oz) Tomato Sauce
  • 1/2 cup BBQ Sauce
  • 1 teaspoon Brown Sugar, optional
  • 1 teaspoon Onion Powder
  • 1 teaspoon Garlic Powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon Chili Powder or Smoked Paprika
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire Sauce
  • 1 tablespoon Cornstarch
  • 3 tablespoons Water
  • 6 Brioche Buns
  • 6 tablespoons BBQ Sauce
  • 6 slices Cheddar Cheese

Equipment

  • Saucepan
  • Skillet
  • Wooden Spoon
  • Chef's Knife
  • Mixing Bowl

Method

  1. First, place a large skillet over medium-high heat and add the canola oil. Wait until the oil shimmers, indicating it's hot enough to start cooking.
  2. Once the oil is hot, add the ground turkey, onion, green bell pepper, black pepper, and kosher salt. Use a wooden spoon to break the meat apart while cooking. Look for the turkey to turn white and no longer be pink, which usually takes about 5 to 7 minutes.
  3. Drain any excess grease from the skillet. This step is crucial for keeping the dish from becoming too oily.
  4. Next, stir in the tomato sauce, BBQ sauce, and the remaining ingredients: brown sugar, onion powder, garlic powder, and chili powder. Make sure everything is well combined.
  5. Reduce the heat to medium and let the mixture simmer for about 10 minutes. This allows the flavors to meld beautifully.
  6. If you find the mixture too watery, mix together 3 tablespoons of water with 1 tablespoon of cornstarch until fully dissolved. Add this slurry to the skillet and continue cooking. Watch as the mixture thickens and becomes even more delicious!
  7. Once thickened, it’s time to serve. Spoon the meat mixture onto the brioche buns.
  8. Top each sandwich with a slice of cheddar cheese and a drizzle of extra BBQ sauce, if desired. The cheese will melt slightly from the heat of the meat.
  9. Enjoy your BBQ Turkey Sloppy Joes immediately, savoring the delightful flavors and textures.
