Method
 

  1. Begin by rinsing the cranberries under cold water to remove any dirt or debris. It's essential to inspect them, discarding any that are soft or blemished, as these can affect the flavor of your sauce.
  2. In a medium saucepan, combine the rinsed cranberries, orange juice, and your desired amount of sugar. If you're unsure, start with half a cup of sugar and adjust later to suit your taste.
  3. Place the saucepan over medium-high heat. Stir the mixture occasionally as it heats up, ensuring the sugar dissolves completely. As the mixture heats, you'll begin to hear the cranberries pop, releasing their juices.
  4. Once the mixture reaches a rolling boil, reduce the heat to a simmer. This is where the magic happens! Allow it to simmer for about five to fifteen minutes, stirring occasionally. The longer you simmer, the thicker and smoother your sauce will become.
  5. Keep an eye on the mixture; as it simmers, you’ll notice it will start to thicken. If you prefer a smoother texture, take the time to mash some of the cranberries with a fork or use a potato masher.
  6. After the desired consistency is reached, remove the saucepan from heat and let it cool for a moment. It's crucial to allow some cooling time, as the sauce will continue to thicken as it cools down.
  7. Transfer the sauce to a bowl or jar and refrigerate until ready to serve. Ideally, allow it to chill for at least two hours for the best flavor.
  8. When you're ready to serve, taste the sauce and adjust the sweetness if necessary by adding more sugar. If you want a smoother consistency, you can blend the sauce using a hand blender until it’s perfectly smooth.
  9. Finally, garnish with some freshly grated zest of an orange or a sprinkle of cinnamon for an extra touch that will impress your guests.

  • Tip 1: Use sugar amount based on preferred sweetness: 1/2 cup for more tart cranberry sauce, 1 cup for sweet cranberry sauce, 3/4 cup for mildly sweet cranberry sauce.
